Starting a Nonprofit ***please note rescheduled date***

This course gives students a nuts-and-bolts foundation for launching a nonprofit organization and shepherding it through its first year, focusing on the legal and regulatory requirements of startup and operation in Virginia. Topics covered include the following:

    • What is the Virginia Non Stock Corporation Act, and how do I comply with its legal requirements?

    • How do I apply for federal tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service?

    • What are the different categories of exemption under 26 U.S.C. Section 501(c)?.

    • What other bases do I need to cover in order to to fulfill state and federal requirements?

The class will also provide a whirlwind tour of other startup essentials: establishing the organization's mission and vision, setting up a working board, hiring staff and the Executive Director, fiduciary relationships, and properly financing the organization.
